BB GLOSSARY
Every term you need to know before your Big Brother 28 fantasy draft. From HOH to jury management, master the language of the game.
The Big Brother glossary is your plain-English key to the show's language, from HOH and the Power of Veto to backdoors, blindsides, and jury management. These 33 terms cover competitions, ceremonies, strategy, and fan culture, so you can read any BB28 episode or fantasy draft board like a longtime superfan.
Head of Household (HOH)
The winner of the weekly HOH competition. The HOH is immune from eviction and nominates houseguests for the block.
Fantasy impact: The most powerful role each week. The outgoing HOH cannot compete in the next HOH comp, creating a vulnerability window.
Power of Veto (POV)
A competition where six players compete — the HOH, the nominees, and others selected by draw. The winner can save one nominee from eviction.
Fantasy impact: The only way to override the HOH's nominations. If used, the HOH must name a replacement nominee.
BB Block Buster
A live competition on eviction night where the three nominees compete for safety. Introduced as the "A.I. Arena" in BB26 and rebranded in BB27.
Fantasy impact: Gives nominees a second chance at safety beyond the Veto, reducing the effectiveness of backdoor strategies.
The Block
The state of being nominated for eviction. Houseguests "on the block" face the house vote unless saved by the Veto or Block Buster.
Fantasy impact: Since BB26, three houseguests are nominated instead of two, increasing strategic complexity.
Nomination Ceremony
The formal event where the HOH announces which houseguests are nominated for eviction that week.
Fantasy impact: Sets the week's strategic agenda. The HOH must balance targeting threats with maintaining social relationships.
Veto Meeting
The ceremony where the POV holder announces whether they will use the Veto to save a nominee or leave nominations unchanged.
Fantasy impact: If the Veto is used, the HOH must name a replacement nominee — often the most dramatic moment of the week.
Replacement Nominee
A houseguest named by the HOH to take the place of a nominee saved by the Power of Veto. The Veto winner cannot be the replacement.
Fantasy impact: Being the renom is often a sign that the HOH sees you as expendable — or is executing a backdoor.
Backdoor
A strategy where the HOH's true target is not initially nominated, preventing them from competing in the Veto. They are only nominated as a replacement after the Veto is used.
Fantasy impact: A high-risk, high-reward play. Less effective since the Block Buster gives the target a second chance at safety.
Blindside
An eviction vote where the evicted houseguest — and often several others — did not see it coming.
Fantasy impact: Blindsides create dramatic TV moments and demonstrate alliance power, but can breed distrust in the house.
Alliance
A secret or semi-public agreement between houseguests to protect each other, share information, and vote together.
Fantasy impact: The foundation of Big Brother strategy. Alliances control votes, but they inevitably fracture as numbers dwindle.
Showmance
A romantic relationship that develops between houseguests during the game.
Fantasy impact: Showmances create a perceived voting bloc, making both partners bigger targets for the rest of the house.
Eviction
The weekly vote where houseguests (excluding the HOH and nominees) privately cast votes to remove one nominee from the game.
Fantasy impact: Votes are cast in the Diary Room and are binding. The HOH only votes to break a tie.
Double Eviction
A special live episode where an entire week's game cycle — HOH, nominations, Veto, and eviction — plays out in a single hour, resulting in two houseguests leaving.
Fantasy impact: Extremely chaotic. Players have minutes, not days, to strategize — often exposing true alliances.
Have-Not
Houseguests who lose a specific competition and must eat "slop," sleep in an uncomfortable room, and take cold showers for the week.
Fantasy impact: A tool of physical and mental attrition. Sleep deprivation and poor nutrition can degrade a player's strategic clarity.
Diary Room
A private room where houseguests share their thoughts and strategies with producers. Eviction votes are cast here.
Fantasy impact: The only private space in the house. What houseguests say here often contrasts with their public persona.
Jury
A group of evicted houseguests (typically 7–9) who are sequestered in a separate location and vote to determine the winner on finale night.
Fantasy impact: Winning Big Brother requires "jury management" — evicting rivals in a way that earns their respect, not their resentment.
America's Favorite Houseguest (AFH)
A fan-voted award worth $50,000, given to the viewer's favorite player regardless of their final placement.
Fantasy impact: A consolation prize for beloved players who don't win. Encourages entertaining gameplay alongside strategic play.
Live Feeds
24/7 unedited video streams of the houseguests, available on Paramount+ and Pluto TV. Feeds are blocked during competitions and ceremonies.
Fantasy impact: The "real" game happens on feeds — alliances form, deals break, and drama unfolds between edited episodes.
Final HOH
A three-part competition held during finale week. The winner chooses who to sit next to in the final two.
Fantasy impact: The most consequential decision in the game — choosing the wrong opponent can cost you the $750,000 prize.
Triple Eviction
A rare variant where three houseguests are evicted in a single live episode, compressing multiple game cycles into one night.
Fantasy impact: Even more chaotic than a double eviction. Introduced in BB22 and used sparingly for maximum shock value.
OTEV
A recurring Veto competition where houseguests race down a slippery slope to find an item that matches a clue. Last one back each round is eliminated.
Fantasy impact: One of BB's most beloved competitions. Physical, chaotic, and often produces memorable wipeouts. The 'OTEV curse' says winning it dooms your game.
Wall Comp (Endurance)
An endurance competition where houseguests hang onto a wall while it tilts, spins, and sprays them. Last one standing wins.
Fantasy impact: A classic test of willpower. Produces iconic moments — especially when houseguests cut deals while hanging on.
Zingbot
A robot character who visits the house to deliver personalized comedic roasts ('zings') about each houseguest. Often appears during a Veto competition.
Fantasy impact: Pure entertainment value, but Zingbot's roasts sometimes expose alliances and showmances, creating real strategic fallout.
Pawn
A houseguest nominated for eviction with no intention of being evicted — placed on the block as a 'safe' nomination next to the HOH's real target.
Fantasy impact: The classic Big Brother trap: 'The pawn always goes home.' Being the pawn is risky because house votes can flip unexpectedly.
Floater
A houseguest who avoids committing to any alliance, instead drifting between power groups depending on who holds HOH each week.
Fantasy impact: A controversial strategy — some see it as savvy adaptability, others as cowardice. Rachel Reilly's 'Floaters, grab a life vest!' is iconic.
Comp Beast
A houseguest who dominates competitions, winning HOH and Veto frequently to stay safe through challenge wins rather than social game.
Fantasy impact: Impressive but dangerous — comp beasts become the biggest targets once they can't win their way to safety.
Final Two
The last two houseguests remaining after the Final HOH competition. They plead their case to the jury, who votes for the winner.
Fantasy impact: Everything in Big Brother leads to this moment. Choosing who to sit next to is the most consequential decision in the game.
Jury House
A separate residence where evicted jury members live, sequestered from the outside world, until they vote for the winner on finale night.
Fantasy impact: What happens in jury house matters — bitter jurors compare notes and can shift the outcome of the entire season.
Slop
A bland oatmeal-like food that Have-Nots must eat for the week. Notorious for its taste and digestive effects.
Fantasy impact: A morale weapon. A week of slop can break a player's focus and make them desperate to avoid Have-Not status.
Dan's Funeral
Dan Gheesling's legendary BB14 move where he held a mock 'funeral' for his own game, giving a tearful speech to manipulate the house into keeping him.
Fantasy impact: Widely considered the greatest single move in Big Brother history. Turned a guaranteed eviction into a complete house flip.
Expect the Unexpected
The show's iconic tagline, delivered by Julie Chen Moonves. A reminder that twists, powers, and surprises can upend the game at any moment.
Fantasy impact: More than a catchphrase — it's the fundamental truth of Big Brother. No plan survives contact with production twists.
Chenbot
An affectionate fan nickname for host Julie Chen Moonves, referencing her precise, robotic delivery during live eviction episodes.
Fantasy impact: No game impact — but you're not a real BB fan until you've used this term. Julie is the heart of the show.
Block Party
Slang for a houseguest who finds themselves on the block multiple times throughout the season, surviving eviction after eviction.
Fantasy impact: Surviving the block builds a 'never say die' reputation that can help or hurt at the jury — depending on how you handle it.
