BB HISTORY
Every winner, twist, and iconic moment from 27 seasons of Big Brother — from the public-vote experiment in 2000 to the Block Buster era.
Big Brother has aired 27 U.S. seasons on CBS since 2000, making it one of television's longest-running reality competitions. The format grew from a public-vote social experiment into a strategic game of alliances, blindsides, and Veto plays. “Who's the mastermind?”
BB Block Buster (rebranded A.I. Arena) + murder mystery theme with Mastermind trio and Accomplice role
Rylie's blindside backdoor in Week 6 was the season's defining moment — a 5-4 vote that fractured the house
Rachel Reilly (BB13 winner) returned as the first veteran on a regular season since BB22 All-Stars. Ashley won 6-1 with a 'social stealth' strategy.
“The arena changes everything”
A.I. Arena (BB Block Buster debut) — 3-nominee system where all three nominees compete in a live comp; winner is saved
Tucker Des Lauriers' explosive, chaotic gameplay made him the breakout star despite an early exit
The 3-nominee system was the biggest format change since the introduction of the Veto in Season 3. The A.I. Arena was rebranded as the BB Block Buster in Season 27.
“The longest game”
Multiverse theme with alternate realities. Humiliverse, Scary-verse, and other themed weeks shook up the game
Cirie Fields from Survivor entered the BB house, bridging two major reality franchises
At 100 days, this was the longest season in BB US history. Jag won a record-tying number of competitions. Matt Klotz is legally deaf and became an inspiration to the disability community.
“The ultimate underdog”
Festie Bestie twist — houseguests paired up and could only be nominated as a duo
Taylor's underdog arc: bullied and targeted from Week 1, she survived to win the game and AFP — the first person to win both
Taylor Hale became the first Black woman to win Big Brother and the first houseguest to win both the grand prize and America's Favorite in the same season.
“History made”
Teams twist + The Cookout — a six-person alliance formed around a shared mission
The Cookout alliance executed one of the most disciplined strategies in BB history, each member sacrificing their closest allies to protect the six
Xavier became the first Black winner of Big Brother. The prize was increased to $750K for the first time. Tiffany Mitchell is widely considered the strategic mastermind of The Cookout.
“COVID All-Stars”
Second all-returnee season — 16 former houseguests returned. First triple eviction in BB US history
Cody played a perfect game — never nominated, unanimous 9-0 jury vote. The Committee alliance steamrolled
Filmed during COVID-19 with extensive safety protocols. Only the second perfect game in BB history after Dan's in BB10. Cody avenged his BB16 loss to Derrick.
“The watermelon king”
Camp Comeback — evicted houseguests stayed in the house for a chance to return to the game
Jackson's controversial watermelon-fueled comp beast run to the end
Nicole Anthony won AFP as a fan favorite underdog. The season was controversial for behavior on live feeds.
“FOUTTE vs. Level Six”
FOUTTE vs. Level Six — two opposing alliances battled all summer. The "Hacker" comp twist let one player secretly control nominations
FOUTTE's hilariously confused reactions to being blindsided week after week became legendary meme material
Tyler Crispen is one of the best to never win. He played a near-perfect game but lost to Kaycee in a close 4-5 vote. Also the first AFP winner to make the Final 2.
“Paul's second heartbreak”
Den of Temptation — weekly twists voted on by America, including a Pendant of Protection and a Halting Hex
Paul lost in a 5-4 vote for the second consecutive season — the most heartbreaking back-to-back loss in BB history
Josh's pots-and-pans strategy was directly inspired by Evel Dick in BB8. Paul controlled the game all season but his betrayals at the jury stage cost him again.
“Revenge of the returnees”
Returnees vs. rookies + Secret Room with a round-trip ticket that could save one evicted player
Nicole became the first woman to beat a man in a Final 2 vote. Paul's aggressive gameplay couldn't overcome jury bitterness.
Nicole returned from BB16 and won her second time around — only the second returnee to win (after Rachel Reilly).
“Twins, poker, and tears”
Twin twist returned — Liz and Julia Nolan secretly swapped until Week 5
Vanessa Rousso played one of the most aggressive, emotional, and strategic games ever — only to be cut at Final 3
Vanessa was a professional poker player. Many fans consider her the best player to not win since Danielle Reyes. Steve won the Final HOH and made the clutch move to cut her.
“The perfect puppeteer”
Battle of the Block — two HOHs each week nominated pairs, and one set of nominees could save themselves
Derrick controlled every single eviction without ever being nominated — a flawless game
Derrick is a real-life undercover police detective. He applied his interrogation and manipulation skills to the game. His Team America alliance with Donny and Frankie was a fan-vote twist.
“The double agent”
MVP twist — America voted for a third nominee each week
Andy played a masterful double-agent game, flipping between alliances undetected until the end
Andy Herren became the first openly gay winner of Big Brother. The season was also controversial for several houseguests' behavior on live feeds.
“Dan's Funeral”
Coaches twist — four returning players (Dan, Britney, Boogie, Janelle) coached teams of newbies, then entered the game themselves
Dan's Funeral — Dan held a mock funeral for his own game, emotionally manipulating the entire house to save himself from certain eviction
Dan Gheesling's BB14 game is considered even more impressive than his winning BB10 game. Many fans argue he was robbed by a bitter jury.
“Floaters, grab a life vest!”
Veterans paired with newbies as "Dynamic Duos" — Rachel/Brendon, Jeff/Jordan, Dick/Daniele returned
Rachel's catchphrase "No one gets between me and my man!" and her cockroach-like survival ability
Rachel won despite being one of the biggest targets all season. Evel Dick left the game in Week 1 for personal reasons, leaving Daniele without her partner.
“Brigade dominance”
Saboteur twist — one houseguest was secretly sabotaging the house for cash prizes
The Brigade alliance (Hayden, Lane, Enzo, Matt) dominated the entire season without ever being exposed
The Brigade is considered one of the most successful alliances in BB history. They controlled every eviction and made it to the Final 4 intact.
“Coup d'Etat chaos”
Cliques (Athletes, Brains, Populars, Off-beats) + Coup d'Etat power twist
Jeff used the Coup d'Etat to overthrow Jessie's HOH — one of the most iconic twist moments in BB history
Jordan is one of the most beloved winners despite not being the strongest strategist. Jeff and Jordan became one of BB's most iconic showmances.
“The perfect game”
No major twist — a pure, old-school game of social strategy
Dan's unanimous 7-0 jury vote made him the first player to win without a single vote against him
Widely regarded as the best "pure" season of Big Brother. Dan Gheesling's game is studied alongside Dr. Will's as the gold standard.
“The winter experiment”
Couples twist — houseguests were paired with their "soulmates" and competed as duos
The only winter season in BB US history, airing February through April
Often considered one of the weaker seasons by fans. The winter schedule was never repeated.
“Family feud”
America's Player — Eric Stein secretly followed America's votes on nominations, votes, and tasks
Evel Dick's scorched-earth gameplay: pots and pans at 3 AM, personal attacks, total psychological warfare
Dick and Daniele are father and daughter — they were estranged before entering the house. Dick's confrontational style was polarizing but effective.
“All-Stars assemble”
First all-returnee season — 14 fan-voted favorites returned to compete
Chilltown (Dr. Will + Boogie) ran the entire house using pure manipulation and charm
Dr. Will Kirby returned and was arguably even more dominant than his winning season, despite finishing 4th. His phone call manipulation strategy is legendary.
“Summer of Secrets”
Secret pairs — houseguests entered with a secret partner the house didn't know about
The Friendship vs. Sovereign Six rivalry defined the season with an intense house split
One of the most divisive finales in BB history — Maggie won despite being one of the least popular winners with the fanbase. Janelle Pierzina became a fan legend.
“The backdoor is born”
Twin twist — Adria and Natalie secretly swapped in and out of the house for weeks
The twin reveal shocked the house when both sisters finally entered the game as separate players
Nakomis invented the "Six-Finger Plan" — a backdoor strategy so clever that production later named the concept after it. First true backdoor in BB history.
“Exes in the house”
Ex-couples entered the house together, forced to coexist with their former partners
Jun's under-the-radar "floater" strategy was years ahead of its time
Jun Song is the first Asian American winner of Big Brother. Her cooking became a genuine social strategy — feeding people builds trust.
“The Danielle Reyes rule”
First Power of Veto competition introduced
Danielle Reyes played one of the best losing games ever — her brutally honest Diary Room sessions were shown to the jury
After Danielle's loss, BB changed the rules so jurors could no longer watch Diary Room footage. Many fans consider her the best player to never win.
“Birth of the modern game”
First HOH competition — houseguests now voted to evict each other
Dr. Will's legendary social game: never won a single competition and still dominated
Will Kirby is widely considered the greatest Big Brother player of all time. He openly told people he was lying and still won.
“The one that started it all”
Public vote — America decided who was evicted, not the houseguests
Chicken George became the first breakout BB personality
The only season where houseguests did not vote to evict each other. The format was completely overhauled for Season 2.
